It’s November, which means engagement season has arrived. If you’re planning to pop the question during the holidays, you may have begun to feel a little nervous. Don’t worry, I’m here to help you plan the most perfect proposal possible. You will tell your engagement story over and over and over again, after all. Instead of telling your proposal story with a slight shrug and a blush, I want you to tell it with confidence and pride! To help you achieve this goal, I have compiled a list of the dos and don’ts of getting engaged.
DON’T assume all diamonds are the same. While all diamonds may be beautiful in their own way, there is a lot more to diamonds than what meets the eye.
DO your research. The first step to any great proposal is getting a great ring. Luckily for you The Leo blog is your one-stop shop for diamond information. First, check out this explanation of The Four C’s and then mosey on over to my blog about The Fifth C to become an expert on diamonds before you make your purchase.
DON’T try to guess what your girl likes. While I’m sure your lady will be so thrilled that you’re popping the question, she’ll be even more thrilled to see the perfect ring on her finger. Don’t assume you know what she likes in engagement rings just because you’ve bought her a sweater or two throughout your relationship.
DO some detective work. I’m 98% sure she has a hidden (or not-so-hidden) wedding Pinterest board. She’s definitely looked at rings and she definitely at least has an idea of what she likes. Take a sneak peek at her Pinterest sometime to get an idea of her preferences. In the unlikely event that she doesn’t have a dream ring stored away on the interwebs, ask her mom and her friends to do some snooping for you!
In addition to learning about her taste in rings, make sure you know her ring size! You don’t want that gorgeous ring falling off her finger as soon as she says yes. Use The Leo app’s ring sizer tool to make sure her engagement ring fits perfectly. All you need to do is snag one of her other rings, place it in the center of the ring sizing tool, then adjust the tool until the ring on the app matches the ring sitting on your phone. Voila, you now know your girl’s size!
DON’T utilize a one-size-fits-all approach to your proposal. This is a very special occasion and you’re asking a very special person. If she’s shy, she may not love a flash-mob proposal in the middle of Times Square. If she’s family-oriented, she may want her parents to be present during the proposal. If she’s a Beyonce-esque diva, she may love a big party to celebrate the occasion.
DO go above and beyond. The proposal is a once-in-a-lifetime moment and you need to go all out. That doesn’t mean you need to arrange a live band to serenade her (unless you think she’d be into it) but it does mean that you need to make this moment special for her. Even a sweet, at-home proposal can be bumped up a notch with her favorite dinner and some Champaign. Be creative and thoughtful!
Most importantly, DO have fun! Enjoy this time of your life with your new fiancée!
