I once considered myself a strong, level-headed woman. Then I stood in the presence of $35 million worth of jewelry. At that point I was reduced to a dramatic Victorian lady on the verge of fainting onto a sofa. Thankfully I was able to pull myself together enough to enjoy a lovely afternoon at the StyleLab Jewelry Suite, and event hosted for celebrities to have the opportunity to try on and borrow beautiful designer jewelry for the red carpet.Michael O’Connor, jewelry and style expert, hand-selected the jewelry available for Sunday’s red carpet event. He took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to talk to me about his process. He explained that he spends almost an entire year curating the collection. He starts at New York Fashion Week, where he begins taking note of trends he thinks will make a statement on the red carpet. This year, he said, he knew would be all about the neck. He then spends the rest of his year selecting pieces and speaking to his clients about what they may want. Once nominations are announced, the real fun begins with constant back-and-forth phone calls and look books.
So, what makes StyleLab’s jewelry selection so special? Michael says it’s the diversity his collection provides. He doesn’t stick to LA-exclusive brands. He chooses brands from all over the world with amazing back-stories that bring the designs to life for celebrities. This approach is one of the reasons why Michael chose Leo Diamond pieces. While I was in the Suite, he often explained to celebrities that The Leo Diamond is the first diamond certified to be visibly brighter. The Leo Diamond’s faraway sparkle is not the only reason Michael loves the brand. Michael’s background is in jewelry design, so he places a lot of importance on how unique a piece is – a trait he says is one of The Leo Diamond’s other strengths. He told me, “The Leo Diamond is so unique and it is exactly what celebrities are looking for.”
During my time at StyleLab Suite I had the pleasure of watching several celebrities go through the process of choosing their jewelry for Sunday night’s event. The highlight of my day was when I was given the opportunity to chat with Suzanne Cryer from “Silicon Valley.” She chose a beautiful 25.5 CTW bracelet from Leeza Braun, a Leo Schachter brand, valued at nearly $65,000. Cryer explained that she planned to wear a simple dress with a little bit of sparkle, and a built-in collar. Because of the collar, she could not wear a necklace, but was looking for a bracelet to add some “wow factor” to her look. Her eyes fell to the Leeza bracelet, and she decided on the piece within five minutes. She said she was looking for something that was big enough to make an impact, but delicate enough to not feel heavy. The Leeza Braun bracelet was just right.
Also, remember the climber earrings I was so excited about last week? Unfortunately for me, they had already been claimed by the talented Lesley Nicol from “Downton Abbey.” Doesn’t she look incredible?
I had an amazing time at the StyleLab Jewelry Suite, and it was too much fun seeing my favorite Leo jewelry on some of my favorite celebrities. Special thank yous to Michael O’Connor, his team, and Suzanne Cryer!
